Lansing is a historic town located in Tompkins County along the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region. The area was originally inhabited by the Cayuga people, one of the nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Following the American Revolutionary War, the land became part of the Central New York Military Tract, established to compensate soldiers for their service. The first permanent settlers arrived in the late eighteenth century, and the Town of Lansing was officially established in 1817 when Tompkins County was formed. The town was named after John Lansing Jr., a prominent New York statesman. Over time, Lansing developed from a collection of farming hamlets into a thriving community that combines agriculture, residential neighborhoods, and commercial development. The town’s location along Cayuga Lake contributed significantly to its growth, providing transportation, recreation, and economic opportunities. Today, Lansing remains known for its rural character, scenic landscapes, and proximity to Ithaca and Cornell University while preserving much of its historical heritage. The town continues to celebrate its agricultural roots and community-focused lifestyle.
