The trade-offs? It's the priciest option upfront, and like composite, it moves with temperature, so proper gapping at install is a must. For the right yard, though, it's hard to beat.

  • How wet is your spot? Close to a lake, in heavy shade, or low to the ground? Lean toward PVC or a quality capped composite. Moisture is the enemy, so pick the material that ignores it.
  • How much maintenance do you actually want to do? Love a weekend project? Wood can work. Want to spend Saturdays using the deck instead of sanding it? Composite or PVC.

Pressure-treated decks run lower to install, while composite and PVC cost more upfront.
